it can give you an idea if you’re moving forward or backwards

My first work desk! The website on the screen was one of the biggest projects I’ve been a part of. We refreshed the brand’s website and I was responsible for creating the majority of the photos and videos for it.

One of the hardest things I had to adjust to working in a role where my work gets published was to receive feedback many times a day.

In my earliest days of working as a creative, I recall feeling overwhelmed of all the streams of varying opinions, changes requests, and things to consider to comply to standard practices. They all weighed heavy in my head that any good I did was overshadowed.

I once saw feedback as a judgement, causing me to feel sufficient or insufficient. But as I experience being in the receiver and giver’s end, I’m learning to see feedback as a guide to move forward.

I switched my perspective on feedback from a criticism to a gift — something that somebody willingly gives you. And since then, I learnt to appreciate feedback, positive or not.

Feedback can be subjective or objective, well thought-out or not given much at all; either way, someone responded that way for a reason and that’s something to learn from.

Without feedback, you are working on your own navigating a path not knowing if it’s forward or backwards.

Feedback is crucial for growth. Feedback is crucial for representing everyone involved in a project.

It can be a real challenge to consider all feedback, varying as they can be, but I believe doing so shows care and can make others feel heard. I think that’s pretty darn powerful.

So if feedback can help you move forward, help represent everyone’s ideas, and can make someone feel heard, what’s not to appreciate?
